The packaging industry is investing tens of billions each year in developing new packaging. The low-cost production of sensors and digital components now allow many unexpected possibilities. For example, a milk can enter when they are not edible.
In Japan there has been a prototype of the sample in the packaging of meat, if the product is still fresh. The Genkyo design office in Japan has developed this smart tag in the shape of an hourglass. The label contains ink particles change their color, the more ammonia is released from the flesh. (The age of the flesh, more ammonia is released). As an hourglass filled with color and the bottom shows at a glance whether the meat is still edible.
If the product is no longer sold, including color bar code and makes them unreadable to the scanner in the box.
This is really a great innovation for the supermarket of the future.
Fresh label was presented at the Good Design Expo in August 2009 in Japan.
